Two teaching pieces on the subject of environmental and species protection
Example Oberkrämer / Upper Havelland
A logistics project comes to a halt on a construction site in Oberkrämer, Brandenburg. Despite extensive preliminary investigations, a large population of sand lizards has been discovered. Before construction can continue, the lizards, protected under species protection law, must be captured by biologists during their resting phase over the winter months and relocated to a replacement habitat. All measures are being carried out in close and cooperative coordination with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Upper Havelland District and the specialist engineers providing ecological support. Nevertheless, a construction delay of ten months cannot be avoided.
Example Falkensee / Havelland
In late summer 2021, Scalaplan GmbH is commissioned with another challenging species protection project. After mapping has already been completed, shortly before the start of construction, they come across sand lizards and sand martins on a brownfield site in an industrial estate that has been operating for years.
For this project, a concept for relocation and the creation of suitable replacement areas must be developed and implemented over the winter months.
The coordination of the compensation measures is carried out in close cooperation with the NABU Brandenburg, the Heinz-Sielmann-Foundation Wustermark, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Havelland district, ecologically accompanying specialist engineers and the involved representatives of the client. A new home will be created for the approximately 250 relocated sand lizards on a replacement area of about 2 hectares in the "Döberitzer Heide" nature reserve.
For the sand martin, a replacement will be created near the community of Brieselang on the Havelland Great Main Canal in the form of a newly constructed swallow mound. This is being done with the participation of NABU Brandenburg and other ornithologists. Finally, the Falkensee project started in September 2022 with a delay of twelve months and is currently in the final phase.
What have we learned?
During project development, it must be thoroughly examined whether environmental or species protection could be issued on the building site. Don't make the wish the father of the thought because otherwise, problems are identified too late. Which usually means longer delays and higher costs.
